MADISONVILLE, KY – The Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center at Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville was presented with a $7,000 donation following First United Bank’s annual Cookin’ for the Cure fundraiser.
During the event, which was held on August 30, over 500 meals with hamburgers and chicken sandwiches were prepared and sold. First United Bank sold out of the meals in just over two hours.
“We can’t thank First United Bank enough,” said Diana Jackson, Director of the Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center. “We would not be able to do what we do without community support. We have so many patients with needs, whether it’s gas vouchers to make it to their chemo appointments or food for those who come in hungry. We’re blessed that donations enable us to provide those things for them, and that we have businesses in our community who are willing to step up and host events like these.”
This was the first time Cookin’ for the Cure had been held since the COVID-19 pandemic. Local businesses, such as Madisonville Market Place, Calhoun’s Custom Meats, and McEnaney Family McDonald’s donated food and supplies that helped to make the event’s return a success.
“First United Bank is a community bank, and it’s our responsibility to support our community,” said Jason Hawkins, President and CEO of First United Bank. “Healthcare is vital, and we really appreciate the Merle M. Mahr Cancer Center. Cancer affects all of us in one way or another and we’re glad to help make an impact for those fighting the battle here in our hometown.”
In addition to proceeds from the sale of meals, several local businesses and individuals also made donations during the event that added to the grand total.
